The development of curriculum in any school requires a great deal of time, effort, and planning to be effective in any school district. In today's educational system, No Child Left Behind continues to dominate what drives curriculum in today's schools. There are national and state goals that help school districts determine what needs to be taught in today's classrooms. From that information, school boards must then make appropriate determinations of how those standards will be met. Those standards are often then passed on to curriculum directors and then on to teachers. Teachers are given the standards and find their own ways in which they will communicate those standards based on the resources they have in their classroom. The ultimate goal of student’s achievement and preparing students for future careers is a tremendous driving factor behind standards.
Implementing change can be difficult for principals. Getting teachers to buy in to new standards, practices, or particular teachings can be difficult. Changing the teacher’s routine can be a difficult task. Principals must find ways to effectively implement curriculum that has been developed either by the state or by teachers within a cohort within the school building itself. For change to take place, effective leadership must be in place. Leadership must come from the principal, but must also accompany the support of effective teachers in the building that are willing and positive toward change.
Once
curriculum is
developed and implemented, it is also essential to determine what
worked and
what didn't. Properly evaluation curriculum and teaching
strategies will
help educational practices move in the direction of increasing student
achievement. Once proper evaluation is done, curriculum can be
modified
and changed and implemented in the classroom for the benefit of
students.
Evaluation should also look at student progress and determine what the
students
where able to achieve within a particular lesson or time period.
The goal
of any school should focus on increasing student’s achievement and
collaboration of teachers, principals, curriculum leaders, and states
themselves will use evaluation as a tool to make education better for
the
students receiving the information.
