Integrating
technology is an important and difficult task for principals to
manage.
Principals today must face the challenge of encouraging teachers and
staff to
integrated technology in their classrooms and must effectively meet the
demands
of a global economy and the progression of technology into the
future. Technology
is not something that can be ignored and finding ways to effectively
integrate
technology in any building becomes the leadership responsibility of the
principal.
When technology change occurs, principals must bring the right people on board to insure that the change is done correctly and with little resistance from staff. Bringing staff on board who are not afraid of change will be trailblazers for other teachers and will provide the support framework necessary to make sure the change is long-term. Another important item of focus is that each building should have in place a technology plan. This plan can be devised by a district as a whole with support staff in place or may take the leadership of the principal themself to insure that technology integration is a priority in the building. Principals must be aware of the infrastructure, wiring, computers, servers, and many other forms of technology available in the building and make sure that these resources are not being wasted and collecting dust, but being used to transform education for students who thrive on using technology.
Students gain a different perspective on technology when they are shown how it can be used in their everyday lives for any subject they learn. It may also be a driving force for students who do not do well in school to do better through the use of technology. The ultimate goal of technology integration is to increase student achievement in the classroom and also to get teachers to buy into using it to teach. Technology is not going to reach the students until the teachers themselves become comfortable. With adequate training and support in the school, teachers will learn ways in which their students can reach new heights. The leadership of all change must fall on the shoulders of the principal as the guiding force behind the change for now into the future.
