One
of the greatest opportunities
that I have had a chance to experience is being a youth coach within my
school. I have been coaching football
for six years and basketball for three years at the middle school level. Teachers in middle schools are also often
the coaches as well. Rapport is already
established with teachers and makes for an easy transition for the
students
knowing the coaches. In addition,
coaches are visible members of the community and become well known
faces by
parents, community members, coaches, referees, and fans.
The ability of a coach to be a positive
influence on players and establishing rapport with parents is important. As a coach you win some games and you lose
some games, but its what you do for the athletes as a person and what
you teach
them that holds far greater value. This paper reflects my
commitment to coaching youth sports programs in the schools and
community in which I live. I am a visible member of the community
much like a principal is and this is a reflection about my expereinces
dealing with students and the community and how their relationship
impacts me as a person, coach, and teacher. Understanding the
community picture is something principals must be aware of as their
growth as a professional.
